JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Veteran Community Initatives, Inc. (VCI) announced Wednesday a new scholarship opportunity to honor its founder and longtime veteran advocate.
The Thomas Caulfield Veterans Remembered Scholarship is named after the Army veteran of the Vietnam War who served as the president and CEO of VCI since 1993.
“For the past 30 years, Tom has been a staunch supporter of our men and women in uniform,” Bob Eyer, VCI board member, said. “This is just a small way of extending that legacy of dedication to a group that’s at the heart of our community.”
The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually and is accepting applications online. To qualify, applicants must be:
- A current member of the military
- A current dependent of a member of the military or a veteran
- A grandchild of a veteran
- Preference may also be given for disabled veteran status or for dependent of a servicemember who died while serving in the military.
Matt Johnson, VCI's Board Chairman, said the new scholarship is another way to honor area veterans and highlight the work that Caulfield did.
